About This Item
London: Macmillan and Co., Limited,, 1899. First edition of the author's analysis of the sharing of wealth within late Victorian society. William Smart (1853-1915), the Adam Smith Professor of Political Economy at the University of Glasgow, had at an earlier stage in his life worked as partner in his father's textile business. In this work, which aims to explain and justify the contemporary distribution of wealth to the "ordinary man", Smart combines the academic and commercial chapters of his life. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Leaf of publisher's advertisements at rear. Short pencil annotations throughout, ink signature of one E. W. Evans on front free endpaper. Light bumping and wear, faint spotting to front cover, cosmetic splits to inner hinges, minor browning and foxing to endpapers, slight separation between several gatherings: a very good copy.
