New York: Macaulay Company, 1929. Hardcover. Good-/Fair. First American edition. Yellow cloth boards stamped in black and silver. Boards are soiled and worn. Fore-edge of text block stained (not affecting page-faces). Interior is unmarked; a few pages have spots of soiling, else clean. Dust jacket is in fair condition: front panel is chipped; rear panel is very grubby and has damage; old repairs on reverse; not price clipped ($2.50); in a clear archival sleeve. The rear panel of the jacket shows a biographical sketch of the author by Malcolm Cowley. 238 pages. 7.5 x 5 inches. Rare in dust jacket. Robert Coates' first novel, The Eater of Darkness, was first published in Paris by Contact Editions in 1926. This is the first American edition, as issued by the Macaulay Company.
