About This Item

London: Hodder and Stoughton Limited,, 1940. First edition, first impression, of one of the first biographies of the famous mountaineer, Edward Whymper (1840-1911), known for the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865. Frank Smythe (1900-1949) compiled this book from Whymper's various boyhood and travelling diaries to "reveal Whymper the man as well as Whymper the mountaineer". Smythe was a mountaineer in his own right, leading the 1931 expedition to climb Kamet, the second-highest mountain in the Garwhal regions of Uttararkhand, India, and the highest peak climbed at the time. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Portrait frontispiece, 23 plates, 2 folding maps at rear, full-page map and 3 facsimile manuscripts in the text. Spine toned, a few marks to cloth, gilt faded, short tear at head of front free endpaper neatly repaired with tissue paper: jacket unclipped, spine toned, slightly soiled and nicked, verso repaired with clear tape, small specks on front panel; a very good copy in good jacket.
