About This Item

New York; (1981): Scribner's Sons. Limited Edition. Octavo. 948 pages, index. Signed by editor Carlos Baker, Hemingway's biographer, in a limited edition of 500 copies of which this is number 324. One of the most important editions with hundreds of Hemingway's letters to important writers of the 20th century. He writes to John Dos Passos in 1925 that "Up in Michigan" was removed by the publisher [Liveright] noting further "Mencken would have published it if the fucking would have been changed to a community corn roast". In his very long letter written in the mid-1930's (during the Depression), he is trying to get a copy of Three Stories and Twenty Poems [he had given all his copies away] and was shocked they were bringing $150. [by 1938 he writes Perkins it had risen to $350]. There are at least a dozen letters on each of his bet novels including Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls; The Sun also Rises. A near fine copy bound in ¼ brown cloth over white cloth lettered in gilt, spine lettering gilt, housed within publisher's cloth covered slipcase.
