About This Item
NY: GP Putnam's Sons, 1932. First edition. Hardcover. Inscribed on the half-title page: "Inscribed for Jean Klienes [sp?] by William Beebe." Uncommon signed. An interesting anthology in that its stated purpose is to connect with younger readers, an early gesture toward environmental education. Beebe was a preeminent and fascinating naturalist-writer, known especially for his ocean expeditions he conducted for the New York Zoological Society. With black-and-white photographs by the author. A near fine book in brilliant blue cloth with gilt lettering and a blue topstain. Spine faded and with a dust smudge to corner of lower text block face. Lacking the dust jacket.

About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
