About This Item
London: Printed for R. Hunter, 1817. iv, 164pp. Contemporary gilt-tooled red roan-backed marbled paper boards. Heavily rubbed, joints starting. Leaves browned, several protruding from text-block. The first edition of Mrs. Barbara Hoflandâs (bap. 1770, d. 1844) popular childrenâs story, which, as with the majority of her works, ran through a plethora of editions, under numerous imprints, up to the 1870s. The work, dedicated to Hofland's fellow Yorkshirewoman 'Mrs. Haugh of Doncaster', is a 'sketch of children in very humble life' intended to 'console the sorrows, stimulate the energies, and encourage the efforts of the industrious poor'. The book was heartily endorsed by Maria Edgeworth (1768-1849), described in the opening remarks as 'the first female author of the present day'. . 12mo.

Concentrating on hand-press printing and early modern manuscripts, we pride ourselves on offering a varied selection of antiquarian works on a diverse range of subjects, leaning towards the interesting, the important, and the unusual.
We have a countryside bookshop in Wareham; we also regularly issue catalogues - do ask if you would like to be added to our mailing list - and frequently exhibit at regional and national book fairs in London, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, and York.
We also offer a valuation service (for either insurance or probate purposes), as well as advice on library development.
