About This Item
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press, 2008. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Association copy: author Elizabeth Watson's own copy of this guide to the grounds of Cold Springs Harbor Laboratory, inscribed boisterously to friends across the whole title page (see photo). Her husband, Nobel Laureate James D. Watson, has added his signature on the right-most margin, reading simply "Jim" (it would seem he signed the book at a later date, since Elizabeth Watson has dated the inscription twice--they used a blue ink for a the second round). He has written a preface to the book. On the front free endpaper of this copy is Elizabeth Watson's address stamp, ownership initials, and phone number, marking the book as a personal copy. A great find for fans of science; with the help of James Watson's leadership for 35 years (ending in 2007), the private Cold Springs Harbor Lab has distinguished itself as a beacon of research on cancer, neuroscience, plant biology, genomics, and quantitative biology. Very near fine without a dust jacket as issued. Uncommon signed. // Wood (+) River (=) Books specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, and environmental literature, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions.

About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
