About This Item

London: George Allen and Unwin Ltd 1946. 8vo. 916 pp. Publisher's full sailcloth in printed dust wrapper. Jacket edge-worn with loss at the head of the spine and minor marks (and printed on re-used war-time paper with map on verso). Slight darkening to the edges of the boards. Internally clean and binding firm. Russell's History of Western Philosophy stands independently as a significant work in the discipline. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy notes that 'His History is still widely read and did much to initiate twentieth-century research on a wide range of historical figures from the presocratics to Leibniz', and still provides one of the most popular systematic introductions to western thought. This First Edition holds interest as a historical artefact in itself, its dustcover printed on part of a military map (of Allenstein now called Olsztyn, in Poland) as a result of wartime paper rationing. Both the text and the book itself, then, are a stark reminder of the power of philosophy to shape the world in which we live. . Very Good. Cloth. First Edition. 1946.
