INSCRIBED on a preliminary page by Clarence Major, one of the authors featured in this anthology: "to Bert / good luck! / Clarence Major." An anthology featuring works by 72 poets, most of them Black or people of color. Besides Major, poets include Julian Bond, Victor Hernández Cruz, David Henderson, Calvin Hernton, Marvin Jackman, Bob Kaufman, Ishmael Reed, Sonia Sanchez, and Gloria and Stephen Tropp. Lengthy prologue by the editor, Walter Lowenfels. Clarence Major (b. 1936), who inscribed this book, has written more than a dozen collections of poetry. He is a distinguished professor emeritus of 20th-century American literature at the University of California, Davis.
This is a review copy, with the Random House notice laid in. Copies signed by any of the contributors are uncommon. An excellent anthology of mostly Black writing, with short bios of the poets. SCARCE SIGNED.
PHYSICAL DETAILS: Octavo (8 3/8 x 5 1/2 inches; 215 x 140 mm), xv, [3], 151, [1] pages, in black quarter cloth over red boards, titles to spine, in an unclipped, photo-illustrated dust jacket (hard cover).
CONDITION: Fine in a Near Fine dust jacket that has light rubbing as well as faint soiling to both panels, especially along the top edge. Nonetheless, a beautiful, collectible copy.
