Signed by the author at the colophon and numbered 4 of 5 (presentation copies in the limited first edition), this book contains a bound-in original oil painting by Charles Bukowski, still protected with the original tissue guard; laid in is Black Sparrow Press Broadside/Flyer No. 7, itself signed by Bukowski and numbered 8/100. Crisp, bright pages; green boards show gentle sunning along the head edges, and spine plate is also mildly sunned, but red cloth spine is fresh; even the original acetate outer cover is near fine, with a touch of finish wear.; Signed by Author.

The title of each picture printed on the guard in brown ink. The colour plates measure 14.9 x 9.6 inches. The card mounts measure 20 x 15 inches. They are housed in the original publishers portfolio with printed title and publication details to front panel. Spine and board corners in beige cloth. Cloth ties to top edge missing but the original ties to the fore and bottom edges are intact. Printed label on inside of front board with the limitation details and numbered and signed by Detmold. This is copy number 204 of only 500 sets produced. The illustrations are held in place with brown card fold-overs to the top and bottom, the fold over at the fore edge is missing. Book is in Good condition, with front hinge starting, cracking between the last table of contents page and beginning of the introduction. All pages intact. Pages unmarked, bit of yellowing/light foxing in rear endpaper/pastedown. Some light foxing on page fore edges. Cover has minimal edgewear, some foxing present to edges, but hard to see against the navy boards.
Dust jacket is in Fair condition, with edgewear, chipping, open and closed tears (mostly at corners/spine ends). All four jacket flap corners trimmed (but price intact: $3.00). Soil mark on rear corner of jacket near spine. General fading/discoloration. Now in a Brodart dust jacket protector.
Carter Glass was born in Lynchburg, VA and was the Secretary of the Treasury under Woodrow Wilson.

Large scene of knight in armour on titlepage + full-page allegorical plate of three graces and flying Mercury signed I A [Jost Amman] & MF +156 full-page woodcuts of men in armour with their shield coats of arms.. Folio in morocco spined boards (tips bit worn). Title in red & black + 2pp (preface and intro) + captioned full page plate as half title (numbered p3) +4-162pp +[2]pp (colophon with large printer's emblem and blank verso), but seems to lack a final blank leaf. At page 55 is a full-page half title with over 30 figures while at page 103 and 145 are divisional titles with large decorative tailpieces. Signed by both Heather Child and Dorothy Colles, and includes a rather lengthy personal letter from Dorothy Colles (written on a piece of stationary with an image of one of her works of art printed on it) to a Steven Nunn. Very rare; we have not seen another signed copy of this book, let alone one signed by both authors and including a personal letter.Publishing house is listed as Charles Scribner's Sons New York on the inside, and has Bell on the spine of the dust jacket and the boards. Publishing location given as Great Britain. SBN is 684130939.Dust jacket is present with a bit of wear and minor tears on the edges. It is clipped. No stickers/residue. The boards show some wear in the form of small faded spots, mostly on the very edges not protected by the jacket.
