John Murray, London, 1920. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Illustrator: Illustrated. prefatory note by Viscount Haldane, list of illustrations. Black-and-white illustrated frontispiece of Goethe by Stieler. The text is illustrated with five other contemporary illustrations, reproduced in black-and-white. Light blue coloured cloth covered boards with dark blue coloured illustration and Goethe's initials to the front panel and dark blue coloured titles to backstrip. The first volume (of a two-volume set) on the life of the 18th century German poet, critic, playwright, naturalist etc., Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Softening to the back strip edges with rubbing of the top book corners and lower book edges. Some rubbing of the book panels along with some marks and quite noticeable sunning / of the back strip. Browning and foxing of the text block edges, with offset tanning and foxing to the endpapers. Foxing scattered throughout the text with age toning. The front hinge has started to crack.
