Samuel Johnson was an English writer who made lasting contributions as a poet, playwright, essayist, moralist, literary critic, sermonist, biographer, editor, and lexicographer. (Wikipedia) Johnson's 'A Dictionary of the English Language' appeared in 1755, and was acclaimed as "one of the greatest single achievements of scholarship", initiating several dictionary genres. Volumes are a first edition reprint "Library of English Classics". <br><br>From title page, Volume I, 1791 edition: "...an Account of His Studies and numerous works, in chronological order; a series of his epistolary correspondence and conversations with many eminent persons and various original pieces of his composition...exhibiting a view of literature and literary men in Great Britain for near half a century during which he flourished." <br><br>Volume I: xv, Biographical Note, Dedication, Advertisement to First Edition, 533 pp. Volume II: 470 pp. Volume III: Index, 522 pp. <br><br>CONDITION: Volumes half bound marbled board, entitled in gilt on brown leather spines with five raised bands and gilt design. Very slight edge, corner wear, head and tail of spines worn; covers mildly rubbed; bindings sound. Matching marbled endpapers. Leaves lightly shaded, toned, unmarked. Attractive binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, a firm of bookbinders established in London in 1901 and considered one of the most important bookbinding companies of the 20th century. Weight of 6+ lbs. may require additional postage. VG. Full refund if not satisfied.
