Very Good/No Dust Jacket As Issued. Magnolia Springs Hotel, Magnolia Springs, Florida, on the St. John's River, Twenty-eight miles south of Jacksonville - One of the most desirable and healthful locations in Florida.
Original decoratively printed wrappers, stitched with later thread. [28] pp. Numerous full-page illustrations from photographs [12], including a double-page panorama of the St. Johns showing the hotel's veranda; floor plans of the hotel, Railroad Depot. 11.3x18.3 cm (4.5 by 7.25 inches), A little wrinkling and wear/soiling to the wrappers, else very good.
There is also an advert with photo for the Childwood Park House in the Adirondacks.
OCLC lists only eight copies of this booklet, with varying numbers of pages, variant wording of the titles, and different managers listed; there is only one copy matching the present example, with 28 pages and Ingold the sole manager named, at Yale. The Magnolia Springs Resort Hotel on the St. Johns River just north of Green Cove Springs provided impressively posh surroundings and service for the most discriminating tourists. It was the first true resort in Florida.
It has the 'best golf course in the South', designed by the famous golf architect Alexander H. Findlay. In 1891-1894 the hotel held the Magnolia Springs Open men's and women's hard cement court tennis tournament. The tournament was an official sanctioned event of the United States National Lawn Tennis Association.
Information on the springs and the health benefits from its water
Northern tourists who descended on Green Cove Springs during the annual winter migrations of the late 1800s would arrive from Jacksonville and take a boat trip south on the St. Johns River. Along the way marveling at the giant live oak trees draping moss into the water.
Arriving at the grand Magnolia Springs Hotel just north of Green Cove Springs nestled in the posh surroundings with the latest innovations of elevator, intercoms to summon liveried servants and both gas and electric lighting. The ladies became less disapproving. Afternoon tea would be served in the lavishly decorated lounge amidst oriental rugs, European landscape paintings, fellow guests would diplomats, congressmen and even an Italian opera star.

1854 HUGE MAP Colton's Western Tourist Emigrant's Guide Americana CaliforniaJ.H. Colton founded an American mapmaking company in the early 1830s which became an international leader in the map publishing industry until 1890. Colton created railroad maps, immigrant guides, elaborate atlases, and more all printed using engraved steel plates, which produced higher quality prints than maps made with less costly wax engravings, which were often separately hand water colored. and were recognized for their decorative borders.
J.H. Colton's 'Western Tourist and Emigrant's Guide'is an important 19th-century geographical book with an enormous folding map of the American 'west' including Ohio, Missouri, Indiana and Wisconsin. According to Howes, this work includes descriptions and material on California, Oregon, and Texas, with overland routes and westward expansion.

London: Bemrose & Sons , 1881. Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket (as published). 5.5" X 8.5. 39pp., A classic study on the origins of place names in the English county of Derbyshire. This copy has had a tough life, the spine strip is missing and both hinges are weak. The pages themselves are all soundly bound. The book includes some related ephemera, including a letter and several newspaper cuttings, mainly from the 1920s. (Includes the author's obituary). Some cuttings are stuck to the pages, but all text is still quite readable. There is the signature of a previous owner (William S Longbottom) at the top of the title page. William Longbottom was better known by his pen name of Horace Weir, the author of many works on the history of Derbyshire. Please note that this is a 19th century produced copy and not a modern reproduction. All orders processed and shipped promptly from the UK, usually within 24 hours.
