About This Item

Chapman & Hall, 1856. First Edition. hardcover. Very Good. 0x0x0. Chapman and Hall; London, 1856. Hardcover. First Edition book, following publication in monthly serial parts also including List of Books published by Chapman and Hall. Included are forty plates (including frontispiece and vignette title) by Hablot K. Browne (Phiz). Book depicts the fall of a Connemara estate in the period between Catholic Emancipation (1829) and the Great Famine (1845-1849). Even as he asserts that the fall of the landed gentry brings disastrous upheaval to a traditional society, Lever insists on the inevitability of such collapse. Levers reforming Anglo-Irish heroine Mary Martin is doomed to defeat and early death, unable to stem the costs of her absentee families arrogant isolation from their tenants and neglect of their responsibilities as landlords. A Very Good, three quarter leather binding with green buckram boards, gilt lettering and ornate design on spine, binding sturdy and intact, TEG with some blemishes, deckle fore-edge and bottom text block edge, sunned leather spine, some age toning to pages, marbled pastedowns and endpapers with discoloration to endpaper margins, some rubbing along board edges, without Dust wrapper. A nice, clean and unmarked copy. 8vo[octavo or approx. 6 x 9 inches]. 625pp. We pack securely and ship daily with delivery confirmation on every book.
