Light wear to corner tips. Spine titles are rubbed and mostly gone. Some soil and foxing to both boards, more visible in certain light. Last few pages have a stain to the top margin. Otherwise the inside pages are clean and unmarked. Endpapers are toned. The story of the author and his dog Polaris, with numerous black and white photographs of this dog and others. Polaris was acquired in 1914 when the author went to Flag Island with Admiral Robert Peary to see some of the dogs which had drawn his sledges to the North Pole. Polaris was a puppy from the litter of one of these dogs. .

From the Preface: "Every incident described in this life of Polaris actually took place, and almost everyone is recounted exactly as it occurred. [Dogs] do not possess such [human] intelligence, they possess canine intelligence and this often serves them better, probably, than would our own." The forebears of Polaris were on Adm. Robert Edwin Peary Sr.'s mushing team to the North Pole. Peary was an American explorer and United States Navy officer who made several expeditions to the Arctic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is best known for claiming to have reached the geographic North Pole with his expedition on April 6, 1909. "Introduction" by Capt. Robert A. Vincent (1866-1935) was a collector of books and bookplates, an amateur historian, with focus on the Pacific NW. From Spokane, Washington, he was President of the Old National Bank of Spokane 1920-1933. This is the true story of Polaris, a dog the author received from Admiral Peary, gathered off of Flag Island in Casco Bay, where Peary's dogs that had pulled him to the Pole were living, this being one of the pups.
