About This Item
London: Williams & Norgate, 1869. 2nd Ed. (1st-1865) . Hardcover. VG. 15 Cm x 23 Cm. Rebound with new endpapers in dark brown cloth with gilt sp .lettering & date at bottom. col.f/piece w.tissue guard+xxviii+619+8 (Dec.1869 pub.list), 228 text figs, 4 further plates (1 col.), foxing to f/piece & tissue guard, t.p. partly faintly browned, pub.list foxed, shallow open creasing to top outer corner through to leaf 10/11, otherwise internally clean, tight & unmarked; . Espousing a thorough-going Darwinian vew of human evolution and drawing together a mass of very recent archaeological work from mainland Europe and elsewhere, this work in effect created the image of Prehistory (then a very new term) and launched human evolution studies, going through six enlarged editions, the last being reissued as late as 1912. Despite faults, which are all quite minor, an extremely attractive copy of this crucial text. First two editions both now apparently rare. This is considerably enlarged from the 1st.
