He became the first full-time professor of law at University of Cape Town in 1920, holding the chair until 1945, and lecturing chiefly on Roman-Dutch law. Many judges in South Africa and Rhodesia studied under him. Wille was one of the best-known legal writers in South Africa. Front outer hinge and head and tail caps neatly restored. Some wear to extremities; spotting along the inner and upper edges of the front board. Booksellers ticket on front free end paper. A name penciled on front blank leaf "G.A. Sanderson Feb. 20 1911" perhaps the same G.A. Sanderson who was a District Attorney in Middlesex County, Ma. around this time. Interior pages are clean. Report of the sensational Boston trial of Leavitt Alley, a local teamster, for the murder of Abijah Ellis a local merchant. Elliss dismembered body was found in a barrel floating in the Charles River. The prosecution alleged that the motive for the murder was a financial debt. The case was based on circumstantial evidence, and Alley was ultimately acquitted. This case has been compared to the 1849 Webster-Parkman murder case[See Philips, Famous cases of circumstantial evidence. Boston, 1873, p. 149 et al.]

Lawyer and judge Garrick Mallery (1784-1866) served in the Pennsylvania legislature from 1827 to 1830. He was the father of Garrick Mallery (1831-1894), an ethnologist who specialized in Native American sign language. Very scarce. In Very Good Condition: disbound; first leaf and last leaf detached but present; light marginal pencil marks; otherwise, clean and tight.

The address was put together by a committee chaired by William M. Meredith. The address is followed by a statement by Daniel L. Miller, Jr., president of the Sunbury and Erie Railroad Company, about the railroad proposed to connect Sunbury to Erie. The Sunbury and Erie Railroad Company had been chartered in 1837, but did not begin construction until 1852, when the state passed enabling legislation. No date of publication; based on information in the address, 1851 is the most likely date. William Morris Meredith (1799-1873) was a lawyer in Philadelphia; he served as Secretary of the Treasury under President Zachary Taylor in 1849 and 1850. Very scarce. In Very Good Condition: disbound; minor foxing along gutter; otherwise, clean and tight.

Original First Edition. 16 page sewn paper pamphlet in wrappers, minor discoloration to edges of covers, old $2 price, and old library call numbers written in pencil on top of front cover, old 15 cent price, and calculation figures not related to text written in pencil on back cover, contents clean and unaffected.In this pamphlet, Judge Leavitt states his reasons (based on historical fact and the Constitution) for his ruling that denied a writ of habeas corpus for the defendant C. L. Vallandigham; leader of the "Peace Democrats," and Supreme Commander of the "Sons of Liberty."
The accused was charged with "mischievous disloyalty" in his opinions and statements; and subsequently arrested at the orders of General Burnside. Lincoln became involved when, in May of 1863, he wrote to Stanton stating that suspension of habeas corpus, as Stanton wanted, would not be necessary in this case.
