About This Item

London: The Engineering Magazine, 1882. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Inscribed by Author(s). 8vo - over 7¾. 1882 --THE ROCHDALE PIONEERS - THIRTY-THREE YEARS OF CO-OPERATION IN ROCHDALE - IN TWO PARTS-- Both parts are bound in a single volume. Inscribed to original owner, signed and dated by GEORGE JACOB HOLYOAKE. Decorative cover. Overall, very nice and bright, presents well. 'Dedicated (by permission) to Lord Brougham, who in his nobly earned elevation has never ceased to advance the intellectual and social welfare of the people; and who lent, when the act was courageous and the service priceless, the influence of his great name for the promotion of social science, of which co-operation is the industrial part'  The Rochdale Principles are a set of ideals for the operation of co-operatives-- set out in 1844 by the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers in Rochdale, England, these form the basis of principles which co-ops around the world still continue to use. George Jacob Holyoake (1817-1906) was an English secularist, co-operator and newspaper editor. In 1840, Holyoake became a 'socialist missionary' and follower of social reformer Robert Owen, a founder of Utopian socialism and the co-operative movement. During this period Holyoake moved to Worcester in west-central England and became a full-time socialist lecturer. G.J. Holyoake was a leading proponent of the co-operative movement who also gained prominence in the 'secularist' press-- Holyoake is credited with coining the terms 'secularism' and 'jingoism'. 7.25"x 5", bumped at one corner, 2" tear at bottom of rear endpaper, a few worn spots around spine..
