George Jacob Holyoake (1817-1906) was an English secularist, co-operator and newspaper editor. In 1840, Holyoake became a 'socialist missionary' and follower of social reformer Robert Owen, a founder of Utopian socialism and the co-operative movement. During this period Holyoake moved to Worcester in west-central England and became a full-time socialist lecturer. G.J. Holyoake was a leading proponent of the co-operative movement who also gained prominence in the 'secularist' press-- Holyoake is credited with coining the terms 'secularism' and 'jingoism'. 7.25"x 5", bumped at one corner, 2" tear at bottom of rear endpaper, a few worn spots around spine..
