About This Item

Rufus Littel, Philadelphia, 1819; octavo (4 3/8" x 7"), 420 pgs.; illustrated; full calf. A detailed scriptural history of both Old and New Testaments, from Genesis through the life and teachings of Christ and his apostles, including a wealth of Judaic history, prophesy, custom, belief, and ritual, the whole organized into an engaging question and answer format. Authored by venerable 18th century English cleric and polymath Isaac Watts, D.D. (1674-1748), best remembered today for his enduring sacred hymns. Three engraved fold-out illustration plates at the back of the book depict exterior and interior views of the ancient Hebrew Tabernacle, keyed for identification. The Holy Of Holies in the third plate is has a small hinged engraved paper veil, which when lifted reveals the contents inside. Very Good. Binding absolutely tight, sound, and square, moderate external wear, two miniscule chinks of the leather at the top extremity of the spine panel, a pair of worm holes in the blank bottom margin of the text, up to pg. 384, scattered light foxing, closed split along the bottom 1 1/4" of the fold out crease of the third plate. Second edition, from the fifteenth London edition, published for subscribers only by Rufus LIttel and printed by M’Carty and Davis at Philadelphia. Twelve page roster of New Jersey and Philadelphia subscribers at the back. Signature of Charles Tomlinson, dated March 10th, 1819 on the front blank end paper, and John Tomlinson, Nov. 24, 1821 on the rear end paper. Engraved bookplate of historian Frank D. Andrews (1847-1937) on front paste down. An enlightening scriptural study by a distinguished early 19th century British divine.
