Light red cloth w black lettering to spine. Light bumping to tail, no edgewear. Binding square and sound. Illustrated DJ is clean but showing creasing and shallow tears to top edge, front flap 2/3 separated and rear flap fold separating 3cm up from bottom edge. DJ now preserved in mylar cover. Octavo. Illia Kiriak, 1888-1955, was born in the Western Ukraine and emigrated to Canada in 1906 working as a laborer and then as a journalist for Ukrainian language newspapers in Edmonton (Alta). He trained as a teacher and worked in various Ukrainian districts across east central Alberta from 1919 until 1936. He published his three-volume epic novel of Ukrainian immigrant life in Canada, Syny Zemli, between 1939 and 1945. An abridged translation by Michael Luchkovich, titled Sons of the Soil, first appeared in 1959 (Ryerson) and was published again in 1979 by St. John's Institute (Edmonton) and in the same year released again in Ukrainian by the Alberta Department of Education. This copy is a second printing of the St. Andrew's College in Winnipeg English language edition, 1983, stated.
