First edition of Specimens of the British Poets by Thomas Campbell in half calf bindings and marbled boards. With biographical and critical notices and an essay on English poetry. Volume I contains an essay on English poetry from Campbell. The remaining volumes contain biographical and critical notes of the most prominent British poets, with examples of their works, chronologically arranged from 1400 to 1805. Volume II covers Chaucer, 1400, to Beaumont, 1628. Volume III Drayton, 1631, to Phillips, 1664. Volume IV Shirley, 1666, to Prior, 1721. Volume V Sewell, 1726, to Carey, 1763. Volume VI Churchill, 1764, to Johnson, 1784. Volume VII Whitehead, 1785, to Anstey, 1805.Thomas Campbell was a Scottish poet and founder of the Clarence Club. With prior owner's book plates to the first pastedown, front free endpaper, and verso of the front free endpaper. From the libraries of Robert Washington Oates, William Edward Oates, and Edward Oates. Also with the book plate of Charles George Young, an English officer of arms, to the first pastedown of Volume I, and a letter pasted to the first free endpaper from 1837. In half calf bindings and marbled boards. Externally, smart. There is some rubbing to the heads and tails of the spines and to the extremities and the joints are starting to crack. With prior owner's book plates to the first pastedown, front free endpaper, and verso of the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean with a few occasional spots. Very Good
