Barre, Massachusetts: Barre Publishers, 1970. Limited first edition of this collection of Aiden Lassell Ripley's sporting etchings. Oblong octavo, original publisher's cloth, illustrated with forty etchings including tissue-guarded frontispiece. One of 500 numbered copies with a print of 'Woodcock' pulled from Ripley's plate by Anderson & Lamb, this is number 79. Commentary by Dana S. Lamb. Introduction by Guido Perera. Fine in the original slipcase which is in very good condition. American artist Aiden Lassell Ripley achieved legendary status during his lifetime and, after his death, has become recognized as one of the foremost masters of American sporting art. Lassell was born in Wakefield, Massachusetts, where he would remain for almost the entirety of his life, and his detailed depictions of the American ruffled grouse, woodcock, quail and pheasant, each in their respective natural environments, remain at the forefront of American sporting paintings and etchings.
