Early children's book that sought to introduce young readers to "the Dark Continent" of Africa through recounting the adventurers of many travelers to the region, including James Bruce, Mungo Park, Stanley & Livingstone, Captain Richard Burton, the Lander brothers, & more. In 262 pages + 16 pages of ads for other children's books in this series in rear, lavishly illustrated throughout with 80 steel engravings & pen-and-ink sketches. A FIRST EDITION, First Printing, from 1893, this hardcover16mo (5" x 6.5") has tan cloth-covered boards pictorially stamped & lettered in orange & black to front & spine. Condition is Good+/VG-: generally quite clean with random spots & smudges, binding strong & straight but gutter cracked at title page. Pages creamy white with moderate, age-appropriate tanning, some foxing to front matter. Boards show rubbing to extremities, bumping & fraying to both corners & ends of spine.
