About This Item

1872 publication, in four volumes, of this Brazilian classic. Text is entirely in Portuguese. According to Wikipedia The book was published in 1871. This may be a first edition. We could not find any previously published. The volumes are ex-library from the U. S. Library of Congress, marked "surplus." The novel is in four small volumes, approximately 150 - 160 pages each. The covers are hard cardboard similar in appearance to old-fashioned notebooks. Spines and the adjacent half inch of cover on either side are black. The cover of the spine on volume one has been covered with black tape, matching the other spine covers. The other three spines show wear. The four volumes' condition is excellent condtion for their age. We haven't examined all the pages, howevers they appear to beclear, clean, without marks, folds, foxing or toning, except for those by the U. S. Library of Congress. Each cover has a white sticker on the upper left corner and the following marks/stamps: a Library of Congress bookplate on the inside front cover and LoC stamped wording on the adjacent flyleaf page; miniscule hand-writen notes and impress stamp on the title page. Otherwise, there were no ex-library indications on the volumes. Bindings are tight, however, the first flyleaf page of vol. 1 is loose -almost ready to separate. See photos.

From Wikipeida (abridged): "José Martiniano de Alencar (May 1, 1829 – December 12, 1877) was a Brazilian lawyer, politician, orator, novelist and dramatist. He is considered to be one of the most famous and influential Brazilian Romantic novelists of the 19th century, and a major exponent of the literary tradition known as "Indianism". Sometimes he signed his works with the pen name Erasmo. He was patron of the 23rd chair of the Brazilian Academy of Letters..."
