Among them are the earliest representations known to us of American natives engaged in cultivating and curing tobacco, of curious pipes, and of the kalian of Persia ".

Jean Néander (1596-1630), médecin de Brême, propose une réflexion sur le tabac et sur l'usage que l'on peut en faire dans la médecine, et s'oppose à tout usage purement récréatif. Il conseille l'usage de longues pipes, comme celles des Indiens, pour permettre le refroidissement de la fumée.

Selon ses dires, le tabac était " une plante créée par Dieu mais le diable s'en est mêlé; en prendre avec excès ruine l'âme et le corps."

Ouvrage curieux et riche de recettes médicales dans la composition desquelles entre les feuilles ou d'autres parties du tabac. L'auteur voit dans le tabac une petite panacée, affirmant qu'il apaise la faim et la soif et peut servir d'antidote en cas d'empoisonnement à l'ellébore (hellébore). Il souligne l'importance des hollandais dans l'importation du tabac d'Amérique en Europe. Y est abordé la culture, la cueillette, la transformation, le stockage du tabac. Ainsi que la façon de le fumer au moyen d'une pipe.

L'édition est illustrée de 9 figures gravées sur cuivre à pleine page. Les 3 premières représentent les différentes espèces de plantes, les 3 suivantes dépeignent des scènes de culture et de transformation du tabac et les 3 dernières figurent divers types de pipes.

Ces gravures sont du plus haut intérêt car ce sont les premières représentations connues d'Amérindiens cultivant et fumant du tabac.

The Tabacologia of Neander is one of the most important works related to tobbaco.

Neander, a German doctor who paid particular attention to the research of plants characteristics, is here studying tobacco. He recommends the use of long pipes, like the ones of Indians, in order to permit the cooling of the smoke. However, if he recommends the use of tobacco in the preparation of medicines, he is against an entertaining use of tobacco.

According to his statements, tobacco was " a plant created by God but the Devil interfered; to consume it excessively ruins the soul and the body. "
