About This Item
Synopsis
John William Cheever was an American novelist and short story writer. His novel, The Wapshot Chronicle, won the National Book Award in 1958. The story is the family saga of the Wapshot family. Captain Leander Wapshot and his sons, Coverly and Moses, and their lives on the New England coast. The story is rendered through Leander’s diary and also through flashbacks; each revealing more about the eccentric family and unfolding the drama behind the small-town Massachusetts village. The novel’s vigorous, interesting characters explore the clash between pious and bourgeois respectability. A deeply compelling, funny yet sentimental novel that is deserving of being called a classic.
