About This Item

New York: Clarkson N. Potter, 1977. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good+. Signed by Author(s). Signed by Eichenberg on title page. Stated First Edition. Gray cloth; spine stamped in gilt. Interior is clean and unmarked. Dust jacket has a short closed tear in the upper-left corner of the front panel; rubbed at corners; not price clipped; in a clear archival sleeve. 199, [1] pages. 11.75 x 8.75 inches. For this volume, Eichenberg himself selected the very best of the thousands of prints and drawings he has done over the years, from his earliest efforts as a student in Leipzig (1921) to his most recent series of wood engravings for The Adventurous Simplicissimus (1977). Included are over 160 samples of Eichenberg's illustrations of the great literary classics, from Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights to Gulliver's Travels, Crime and Punishment, The Brothers Karamozov, and Fathers and Sons, as well as Shakespeare's plays, the Bible, Dylan Thomas's A Child's Christmas in Wales, Erasmus's In Praise of Folly, and many more. Accompanying the prints are Eichenberg's reflections on his life, his work, and the almost mystical significance that his favorite medium, the woodblock, has assumed in his development as an artist. Introduction by Alan Fern (Director of Research, The Library of Congress).
