Description:
A source collection of antiquarian books and engravings formed by Richard von Hunderdorff on Cicisbeismo, the unusual social convention peculiar to the Italian Enlightenment.  The subject of the catalogue is the relationship between married women and young men of noble birth in 18th century Italy and Spain.  This collection is a sophisticated look at 18th century continental women and their position in society. The collection deals with the status of noble women, their place in society, the restraints to their freedoms, and the ways they were able to engage men as escorts and confidants which allowed them to participate more openly in the social setting of their period.  What is perhaps most interesting about the collection is that it not only chronicles the evolution of the position of women in Italy and Spain but records the reaction to this social phenomenon by French, German and English writers and visitors to these countries.  The criticism was almost universal and at times ferocious.  The… Read More

Ancient gymnastics for a Renaissance audience First edition of "the first complete text on gymnastics" (Heirs of Hippocrates), and one of the earliest works to discuss the therapeutic value of exercise and sport for the cure of disease and disability. The work "stresses the importance that all forms of exercise have in maintaining good health. Mercuriale describes ancient gymnasia and baths and discusses mild exercises such as dancing as well as more strenuous pursuits such as wrestling and boxing. He also gives full consideration to the health benefits of proper exercise and concludes the book with a section of therapeutic exercises" (ibid.). "The book was immensely popular at the time and is currently one of the most sought after books by Renaissance book collectors... he provides a detailed history of the ancient gymnastic exercises referencing a total of… Read More

Description:
Read More

Der Tod in Venedig[Death in Venice] in Die neue Rundschau
Thomas Mann
Berlin, 1912
First appearance of Mann's brooding work - in the October and November 1912 issues of Die neue Rundschau, Germany's famed literary magazine.
Original wrappers, a few water stains on the moderately darkened spines, October issue with large owner signature on front cover verso, November covers with some pencil underlining of various listed stories. Both bindings very sound with largely clean text. Overall, nice Very Good copies.
A cult classic of 20th century fiction that explores an aesthete's self-destruction. Doom's shadow envelops his being with its dreary coldness, methodically freezing it until a moment's hammer shatters everything.

(Paris, vers 1769).
