Original brown cloth, gilt titles with unfurling scroll decoration on front board. Includes engraved plates and facsimiles of nine original letters and notes written to Grant and contemporaries. A biography by the Union officer who served on Grant's staff during the American Civil War. Badeau also wrote a three-volume history of Grant's military career, and assisted Grant in the editing of his own Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant. This work focuses on Grant's political and social involvements with such notable people as General Philip Sheridan, Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of State Hamilton Fish, and others.

The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two?
