Memoir of growing up in a ghetto in Pretoria, South Africa during apartheid. The author, who changed his name from Ezekiel to Es'kia Mphahlele (1919-2008) was a South African writer, artist and activist celebrated as the Father of African Humanism and a founding figure of modern African literature. In 1998, Nelson Mandela awarded him the Order of the Southern Cross, the highest recognition granted by the South African government.
