From the publisher

Charles John Allen was an important figure in early 20th century sculpture, forging a position within the 'New Sculpture' movement, and establishing a tradition of sculptural practice in Liverpool through his more than 30 years of teaching. Whilst his most noted solo work is the Victoria monument, Derby Square, Liverpool, he completed numerous commissions, including architectural projects, portrait busts, ideal figure groups and medals. His work Love and the Mermaid won a gold medal at the Paris International Exhibition in 1900. From 1894 Allen worked as sculpture instructor in the Liverpool School of Architecture and Applied Arts at the University. He was thus involved in the now famous 'Art Sheds', teaching alongside figures such as Robert Anning Bell, Herbert McNair, and for a brief period Augustus John. In 1905 Allen moved to the Liverpool City School of Art, where he remained until his retirement in 1927. Allen's considerable artistic achievements have secured him a place in the history of the New Sculpture. The catalog includes over 60 photographs of his work along with three essays providing a remarkable insights into his life and work.
