Very Good/No Jacket. 189 pages b/w photos - spine sunned - Very complete history of one of the earliest railroads in North America, traveling from Baltimore MD north to Lake Ontario through central Pennsylvania. This was one of the few railroads that built north south instead of in a westerly direction, it was a vital link during the North's Civil War efforts. Eventually becoming one of the PRR divisions, it was doomed after Hurricane Agnes in 1972 washed out several bridges. The PRR with a straighter river level route along the Susquehanna chose not to rebuild the NC route with its numerous twists. Near York, PA is the Howard Tunnel, one of the oldest rail tunnels in the US still in use. Today, occasional excursions still exist, along with a popular rail trail, although the NC Dinner train no longer runs, there are occasional trips through to the Stewartstown Railroad which does still run and relies…
