Description:
Sydney, Hornsby: Ollif Publishing , 1983. 1st ed.. Hardback octavo, dustjacket, very good condition (in very good dustjacket), map, frontispiece, few black & white photos, pages lightly toned, minor edgewear jacket (slight foxing reverse side), board covers little faded & marked, autograph (author rubber stamp title page). 271 pp. Major Frances Murphy tells of her adventures and trials as one of a contingent of Australian army nurses during service duties in various battle zones during World War II. The nurses were fondly known as the 'Angels in Grey', and their fate in war and captivity is reported. They were rescued from the Sandakan Japanese POW camp, and ten nurses were returned to their homeland by air to face long periods of hospitalisation. Murphy settled back in to her domestic life. After losing her son and daughter in Vietnam, Frances decided that the story of the P.O.W. Nurses must be told, and set her mind to producing this book.
