Although Brazilian cities have generally grown uncontrollably in recent decades, deteriorating spaces, memories and widening social inequality, there is a belief that planning is still possible, with a view to putting what was crooked. This is the feeling expressed in the book Espaço em obra: city, art, architecture (Edições Sesc), by architect and critic Guilherme Wisnik and designer Julio Mariutti. The launch of the publication throws light on key issues such as the impasses surrounding urbanism in Brazil and the world, as well as the relationship between art and cities and their public or private spaces, interfering with architecture. "The architects, and I share this feeling, believe that correct planning can improve an established situation in the absence of any plan," says Wisnik.
