New York: W.W. Munsell, 1882. Hundreds of pages, numbered in sections. With a hand-colored folding Map of Long Island at front, approx. 11 ¾" x 27" size overall. The text black and white illustrated throughout. Containing an Outline History of New York, a General History of Long Island; with information on the Indians, settlers, treaties, the Revolutionary War on Long Island, smuggling, privateering, agriculture, statistics of Suffolk County. Also with Town and Village histories of Babylon, Brookhaven, East Hampton, Huntington, Islip, Riverhead, Shelter Island, Smithtown, Southampton and Southold. With much genealogical information: biographies of the prominent members of the Bayles, Beecher, Belmont, Buel, Conklin, Cook, Floyd, Davenport, Gardiner, Payne, Scudder, Smith, Woodhull and Young families among many others. The biographies embellished with many finely-engraved and also woodcut portraits of prominent Long Island family members; illustrations of their residences and more. Previous owner inscription on the front endpaper: "J.G. Tuthill Bought from J.B. Tuthill May 9th 1894." Approx. 9" x 12"; faded reddish-brown cloth-covered boards, leather spine, gilt cover titles, all edges gilt. Spine covering worn & chipped, old owner glue repair; some edge, tips wear to binding; bock of text bound strongly. Contents in very good condition and a good resource for Long Island genealogy and history, with a very good copy of the map. . First Edition. Leather. Good.
