About This Item

West Point, 1844. A letter from a West Point cadet to his cousin asking for a loan, and hoping the the "flare-up" with Mexico was "all a hoax". Letter dated West Point Dec. 16 1844; cousin J. A. Hardie in West Point writes to James Thomson at No. 56 Cherry St. New York lamenting that "...I should not be so often obliged to trouble you, if the Paymaster would be obliging enough to pay me half my monthly due, at the end of the month, as is frequently done at other posts..." A postscript anxiously asks, "...Is the flare-up with Mexico all a hoax? I hope so." Our research indicates there was a J.A. Hardie enrolled at West Point at this time; the Mexican 'flare-up' resulted in war with the U.S. Approx. 7 3/4 x 9 3/4", each panel; only one side & a few lines on next page used; ink handwriting, very legible. Some edge chipping; in good condition. Interesting 19th century New York City & West Point social & military history ephemera.
