The spine is badly sun faded, and there is minor fading across the top inch of the back cover. There is a small bookplate (blank) at the top left corner of the first paste-down page. Text is otherwise clean with no extraneous writing or marks. "The Fifth Letter" is No. 40 in the first series of publications by the Hakluyt Society between 1847 and 1873. It includes not only the letter from Cortes, dated 1526, but the society's 1868 annual report.
