About This Item
London: John Murray, 1835. Cloth. Very Good. 8.5" by 5". None. Two short stories in their first UK edition by renowned American author Washington Irving. Washington Irving (1783-1859) was an American author and historian, primarily remembered for his short stories, including 'Rip Van Winkle' and 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow'. He also wrote biographies on figures such as Oliver Goldsmith, George Washington and Muhammed. This is the first British edition of these two stories, containing 'Abbotsford' and 'Newstead Abbey'. 'Newstead Abbey' caused a stir when in 1837 it was pointed out to William Clancy, bishop to Demerera, that a passage within may not be an accurate reflection of Catholic practise. Irving promised to have the passage in question altered, and Clancy travelled to Newstead Abbey to see the document Irving was referring to, but it is not clean whether any action was taken as the passage remained unaltered in the 1849 edition.A leaf to the rear indicates that lately a similar volume, 'Tour on the Prairies' by the same author had been published. In a full cloth binding. Externally a trifle rubbed, with the spine faded and bumping to the extremities. Internally firmly bound, pages bright and clean. Very Good
