About This Item

First and only edition.

The story is about the African animals and their friend, a little boy Mik who decided to build an ice-cream factory in Africa. Mik and animals took a trip to Milk country, Orchard country, Sugar country and Ice county and learned the secrets of ice-cream producing.

The author, Evgeny Rein (born 1935), is a prominent poet, writer, translator and Joseph Brodsky's friend. He also was one of the Akhmatova's Orphans, the poetic group from Leningrad. Rein earned a living by writing popular scientific articles in children's magazines and children's books. His poems were published in samizdat, and the first collection of verses appeared only in 1984.

The book was illustrated by an artist, Igor Ershov (1916-1985). He studied at the Ilya Repin Leningrad Institute (former the Imperial Academy of Arts) under Vladimir Konashevich. Since the 1950s, Ershov worked as a book illustrator.

The book is from the children's collection of Inna Shmeleva (1929-2020), an artist, who studied under Ely Bielutin, the founder of The New Reality artistic academy. In 1962 Shmeleva participated in the 30th anniversary of the Moscow Union of Artist at the Central Exhibition Hall (Manège) which was severely criticized by Nikita Khrushchev. This event marked the end of the period called as the Khrushchev Thaw.
