Retold by Boris Zakhoder.
First edition with these illustrations. First book edition of this translation.
This adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was done by Boris Zakhoder (1918–2000), a prominent poet, translator, and children's writer. Zakhoder's version was first published in the magazine Pioneer in 1971–1972 (# 12, 1-3) and was accompanied by an introduction where he expressed his desire to rename the book something more creative than Alice in Wonderland. He suggested names such as Aliska in Imagination, Aliska in Surprisedland, Aliska in Chepukhania or Aliska in Raschudesiya, but ultimately succumbed to the established literary tradition. Zakhoder also confessed that Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was his favorite book, which he had re-read in the original language for 25 years before translating it into Russian. He tried to convey the same emotions and imaginative spirit of the English version to Russian children in his translation. Zakhoder's adaptation was a… Read More

Description:
Limited to 1430 copies. This story by a well-known writer Emily Mindlin (1900-1981), is devoted to an older man who came to look at the Dnieper Hydroelectric Station construction, the largest hydroelectric power station on the Dnieper River. The station was built in two stages. DniproHES-1 was initially built between 1927-1932 but was destroyed during WWII to make the river harder for the advancing German forces to cross. It was rebuilt between 1944-1950. Karachay-Balkar is a Turkic language spoken by the Karachays and Balkars who live in the North Caucasus. After the October Revolution, as part of a state campaign of Latinisation of Karachay and Balkar, educators developed a new alphabet based on Latin letters. It was used from 1929 till 1939. The new alphabet based on Cyrillic letters was officially adopted later. During the war, both peoples were accused of aiding the German invaders and were deported from their permanent residence in one day. A few books published before the war in the Latin… Read More

Description:
First edition. The only edition with these illustrations. The verses were designed by two book artists: Felix-Lev Zbarsky (1931-2016) and Mark Klyachko (1924-2000). Zbarsky studied at the Moscow Polygraphic Institute and became famous when he designed Yury Olesha's Selected works and Yves Montand's Memoirs in 1956. Sergei Dovlatov wrote that the Khrushchev Thaw for him began with the drawings of Zbarsky. The artist also worked at the animation studio as a production designer. In 1972 the artist emigrated to Israel and later to the USA. Klyachko studied at the Surikov Art Institute in Moscow. He is best known for the illustrations to the Russian edition of Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea (1974). The book design was criticized for the avant-garde style. So it was one of the reasons for reorganization of the publishing house. The book is from the children's collection of Inna Shmeleva (1929-2020), an artist, who studied under Ely Bielutin, the founder of The New Reality artistic academy. In 1962… Read More

Description:
Translation by E. Selezneva.
First Bisset's Russian book. The only edition of these illustrations.
This is Donald Bisset's first book in Russian, which introduced the storyteller to Soviet children. It is believed that Bisset is more famous in Russia than in his home country. Many of his stories were translated and adapted into animated films, including puppet animation. Bisset visited the USSR for the first time in 1969 and participated in the International Conference of Children's Book Writers in Moscow in 1973.

He studied at the Moscow Polygraphic Institute, where later he taught. In 2005 Mirutich was awarded the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun. The book is from the children's collection of Inna Shmeleva (1929-2020), an artist, who studied under Ely Bielutin, the founder of The New Reality artistic academy. In 1962 Shmeleva participated in the 30th anniversary of the Moscow Union of Artist at the Central… Read More
