A Londres, Chez Jean Nourse., 1741. 12mo, 167 x 92 mms., pp. xvi. 376 [377 - 381 index, 382 blank], title-page in red and black, engraved frontispiece of Locke, library stamp and contemporary name on title-page, contemporary speckled French calf, spine richly gilt in compartments, all edges gilt, contemporary ms. bookplate on front paste-down end-paper; some slight wear, but a very good to fine copy. Locke's Essay was first translated into French by Pierre Coste and published in1700. Although John Nourse established himself as a publisher of literature and scientific works in French, this edition is often said to be printed in Paris and was probably printed by Trevoux. Yolton 135.
