A couple of pages have handwritten notations in the margins, presumably by Samuel A. Ashe. The notations are on pages pertaining to the Ashe family. Laid in loosely in a plastic sleeve is typed letter from publisher A. B. Caldwell to Capt. S. A. Ashe of Raleigh, North Carolina. The letter is on Caldwell Publishing Company letterhead and is on cheap paper that has several tears and crease. Text is toned and shows foxing as well as some occasional stains. Illustrated with 16 of 17 engravings, lacking the engraving of Sheridan on page 8 of Volume II. The engravings include a frontis for each volume as well as an engraved title page for each volume. A sound set.

Hardcovers in burgundy cloth, with title in gilt on front covers and spines. All volumes have moderate wear, including some heavy spotting (foxing) and rubbing. Some corners are bumped, some fore-edges are bumped. There is a dent in the spine (on the title) on Volume VI. All edges of text blocks are foxed, and the text has sporadic foxing. Interior is a bit musty. A sound set. Set includes the original receipt from Blackwell's in England, circa 1966.

Hardcovers bound in original brown half leather with dark green and red marbled paper-covered boards. Gilt rules on the spines with black bands flat on the spine as well as gilt devices in the panels. The bindings are rubbed and bumped, but the bindings are study. Spines a little scuffed, and spine ends are abraded or heavily rubbed. Volume II has a couple of puncture marks at the bottom left corner of the front cover, affecting the first few leaves (mostly blanks) of the text block). Volume I has a strip cut away from the top of the title page, and Volume II has an early owner's signature across the title page (illegible). Text is toned and has some foxing, but the text blocks are sound. A decent set in original contemporary bindings.
