About This Item
Montgomery, Alabama: The State of Alabama (Jno. G. Stokes & Co., State Printers), 1868. 1st. Good. The 1868 1st edition of this remarkable piece of post-Civil War --and Reconstruction-- history. In this collection of reolutions and laws passed by Alabama's General Assembly, "the Legislature by Joint Resolution ratifies the Thirteenth Amendment --barring slavery-- and the Fourteenth Amwendment --according citizenship to Negroes and prohibiting state actions which deny due process of law and the equal protection of the laws. Also enacted are laws requiring racially segregated public schools 'unless it be by the unanimous consent of the parents and guardians of such children'; declaring Alabama's Ordinance of Secession 'unconstitutional, null and void'; organizing a volunteer militia 'without regard to race or color'; declaring cohabitations between blacks, commenced during slavery, to constitute vaild marriages; vesting property rights in freed men; prohibiting intimidation at the polls; repudiating the State's war debt; rendering void all contracts for the purchase of slaves; thanking General Pope for his administration of the military government". A solid, Good to Good+ copy. In its original 1/4 leather, which shows rubbing and scuffing at the panels, and its original leather spine label. Pronounced offsetting --and foxing-- to much of the text, all of which though is still very readable. 1871 signature (indecipherable) at the rear pastedown, recent former owner name, date and address in small words at the front free endpaper. (Owen 1014, Ellison 1499).
