George Edmund Badger (1795-1866) was a superior court judge, Secretary of the Navy, and was a U.S. Senator, originally from New Bern, North Carolina. In 1828 he supported Andrew Jackson as President, but he opposed the National Bank, so he joined the newly formed Whig Party. In 1840 he was appointed as Secretary of the Navy, and he did much to modernize the Navy, setting the foundation for the Atlantic Fleet and investing in research for new types of Ordinance and weapons.
