Tight, attractive reprint edition of the 1928 Albert & Boni edition of this classic slave-trading narrative, first published in 1854 -- with choice autograph addition: Tipped to front pastedown is a near fine Typed Note Signed from editor and introducer Cowley, 1p, 7½" X 10", New York, NY, 10 September 1940. Addressed to noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Near fine. Two original folds. On letterhead of "The New Republic" listing him as one of its editors, Cowley thanks this admirer for birthday wishes. Large and bold full signature. Cowley (1898-1989) was a noted editor, writer, critic, historian and chronicler of the "Lost Generation" of which he was one of the last survivors.
