About This Item

Toronto: Clarke Irwin, 1968. Book. Very Good. Soft cover. First Printing - First Thus. 12mo. 363 pp. Trade paperback format. Clarke Irwin Book CIE-10. Lightly rubbed on the corners with a flat uncreased spine; no interior markings. This is actually an un-read copy, acquired from the publisher when they decided to sell off all the saved copies of their back-list; mostly, there were only one or two copies of each title, retained by the company for reference purposes. The first edition of this was actually published in London in 1884, not in the U.S. as one would expect. The American first didn't come out until the following year. Since then, there have been hundreds of editiions. Ernest Hemingway said all modern American literature came from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn. There have also been at least sixteen movies. Perhaps the most interesting of the early ones was in 1939, directed by Richard Thorpe and starring Mickey Rooney as Huck, along with Walter Connolly, William Frawley, Rex Ingram, Lynne Carver, Elizabeth Risdon, Victor Kilian and a host of others. There was another one of note done in 1960, directed by Michael Curtiz and starring Eddie Hodges, Tony Randall, Patty McCormack, Neville Brand, Mickey Shaughnessy, Andy Devine, Buster Keaton, John Carradine, Harry Dean Stanton and others, including the boxer Archie Moore as Jim..

Synopsis

Commonly named among the Great American novels, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, written by Mark Twain, is generally regarded as the sequel to his earlier novel, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer; however, in Huckleberry Finn, Twain focused increasingly on the institution of slavery and the South. Narrated by Huckleberry “Huck” Finn in Southern antebellum vernacular, the novel gives vivid descriptions of people and daily life along the Mississippi River while following the adventure of Huck and a runaway slave, Jim, rafting their way to freedom.
