Boston, Massachusetts:: Roberts Brothers, 1876. A square copy, reasonably bright, clean and tight. Spine ends a little frayed. Tips worn through. Front inner hinge cracked, but holding. Rear inner hinge starting. Original brown endpapers. Top edge gilt. Bound in the original brick-red cloth, handsomely decorated on the spine and front cover in black and gold. All gilt is still quite bright and shiny. Gift note in light pencil (easily erasable): "J. H. Gleason with regards of F. H. Forman" [or possibly Freeman? -- first part of second name is hard to decipher]. Pages are clean and free of markings. No foxing. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, from the English sheets, with "LONDON, Printed by John Strangeways, Castle St. Leicester Sq." imprinted on verso of title page. Published the same year as the first British edition. Pye 9b [A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF AMERICAN EDITIONS OF WILLIAM MORRIS]. For the first London edition see: H.
