[Paris]: Andre Sauret, 1959. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/Near fine. 4to, Yellow cloth-covered boards with titles stamped in brilliant purple on the upper board and spine; gorgeous full-color dust jacket; publisher's clear acetate dust cover; pp. 15, 1-102 (single-sided plates), 239-[247] (Catalogue Descriptif), [1] (Colophon). Book is fine, jacket very nearly so (touch of rubbing at the edges), and likewise the acetate dust cover. One of the most beautiful books on lithography ever printed, and a true labor of love. Fernand Mourlot, a third-generation Parisian printer, expanded into lithography in the 1920s, and worked directly with some of the top artists of the day, including those presented here. The text was set by hand at the Imprimerie Nationale, and the reproductions lovingly crafted at Mourlot Freres. Five lithographs inserted at the rear were created by the artists during the course of work on the book. The dust jacket cover was created by Matisse in honor of the hundred-year anniversary of the press. The works here include the seminal (such as Matisse's "Jazz" poster), but also include posters produced purely as advertising; without exception, however, they are stunning works of art. The bibliographic detail in the descriptive catalogue includes the number of originals produced, etc. Truly an exceptional book.

Description:
This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art
