The text is illustrated with three inserts, of eight pages each of contemporary black-and-white photographs and illustrations. Brown coloured boards with metallic copper titles and illustration to the backstrip. Colour illustrated dustwrapper with black and brown colour titles to the front panel and backstrip. A history of European exploration of Africa between the years 1769 to 1889. The usual suspects are talked about – Richard Burton, Stanley and Livingston, but the lesser lights (but no less intrepid) explorers are also given their due. As the front fold over panel states "... Based upon the Explorers' letters and diaries and the printed records of their dramatic journeys, Africa Explored provides an illuminating an unforgettable impression of the continent and its inhabitants as they appear to Europeans before the age of colonialism changed both for ever." Softening to the backstrip edges with light rubbing of the book corners and lower edges. Slight cocking of the spine. Browning faint foxing to the textblock edges and there is faint foxing to the endpapers. Previous owners name to the top edge of the free front end page. A little rubbing to the dustwrapper edges and panels and faint fading to the backstrip and top edge of the front panel. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. [12], 13-335, [1] pages,.
