About This Item
Llanerch Press. Very Good. 1990. Soft Cover. 8vo 0947992561 Paperback: 180 pages clean and tight. Facsimile edition (Dec. 1990). Professor Barbier's book has long been out of print and difficult to obtain. His classic study covers the history of Wales from December, 1135 to November, 1170. The greatest Welsh figure of the middle of the XIIth century is certainly Owain Gwynedd; he and he alone, can form a central figure for the history of the time. It was the time when the struggle was keenest and most dramatic between the centralising forces of the Anglo-Norman monarchy and the Celtic tribal organization, between the ideals of the Celtic Church and those of the Roman Church. It was a time when the literature of Wales revived and many of her great writers flourished; a time too when Celtic folklore penetrated into the literature of the neighbouring peoples. Paul Barbier wrote this work for the Newport National Eisteddfod; his Welsh title was 'Emil Ddu o Lydaw.' He was professor of Romance Philology at the University of Leeds. His father, also Paul Barbier, was a Professor of the University of Wales, in Cardiff. .
